Safety precautions should be taken seriously in every room of the house, especially the living room. As a gathering place for fun, conversation, and relaxation, this room does it all for this family of six. To make sure the digs were up to our safety standards, we sent style expert and mother-of-two Emily Henderson over for a lesson in living room safety. From the fireplace to the walls, there is room for improvement in every home. Check out how Emily improved the safety of these spaces without sacrificing style.

1. Fire Safety
2. Clever Cord Keeper
Stylish decor and home safety measures? Count us in! What looks like a stack of good reads on the mantel actually hides a jumble of cords and gaming devices. The trick here is to remove the pages and covers and replace the now empty space with a tray. With just a few tools, you can make your own safe storage unit sized to fit any width, height, and length. Small hands can get ahold of loose cords, so it's best to keep those out of reach and out of sight.
3. Stay Alert
One of the best ways to keep your family safe is with an alarm system near the door to alert you of any intruders. The problem is that bulky wall-mounted alarm devices are quite the eyesore. To provide a solution to this problem without interrupting the look of the room, Emily installed a gallery wall. Hiding behind one thick canvas frame is an alarm security device. Make sure yours is low enough for the kids to reach and set with an easy-to-remember code that unwanted guests won't be able to guess.
