About our Artist: "The name of our project is Taller Maya, and we work with about 200 Maya artisans in the Yucatan peninsula. Traditionally, handcrafting among the Maya has been done by men, so it was difficult at first to get the women in our project involved. We developed training programs to foster teamwork and to help the women learn weaving on pedal looms, making filigree jewelry and other traditional crafts of the peninsula. Our project has helped to ensure a better life for our workers and has created opportunities for education, health and social well being. One of our workers, Dona Landy, has inspired others to persevere and even get their husbands involved. Our project has been recognized internationally and has received several awards, including the Conde Nast World Savers Award in 2009 for our social and environmental commitment and our contributions to the relief of poverty." read more
