How to Design Laundry Room Cabinets

Striking the right balance between storage and work space is key when designing laundry room cabinets. Consider what activities need to take place in the laundry room (such as treating stains and sorting or folding clothes), as well as the items that are housed there, including detergents, cleaning products, ironing supplies, hanging clothes, and more. Note whether you prefer the clean look of closed cabinet doors or the convenience of open storage. Including a mix of storage types and a handy work surface can help you maximize your laundry area.

Personalized Laundry Room Cabinet Ideas

Personalize your laundry room with bold colors and patterns to make washing and folding duties less tedious. In this laundry area, brilliant blue cabinets pair with palm frond wallpaper to fashion a fun, tropical-inspired room. An open cubby area built into the lower cabinetry provides a cozy hangout for the family pet.

DIY Laundry Room Cabinet Update

Closed laundry room cabinets create a tidy, polished look, but open storage areas can also be helpful for organizing often-used items. To convert regular cabinetry to open shelving, simply remove the doors and fill in any holes left behind by hardware. Here, open laundry room cabinets are lined with baskets labeled with each family member's name, which can be used to sort and stash laundry that is ready to be folded or put away.

Laundry Room Wall Cabinets

Most laundry room cabinet designs leave some space between the bottom of the cabinet and the countertop. This laundry room makes use of that usually discarded area with two sets of storage cabinets stacked above the washer and dryer. Although this sacrifices some of your countertop work space, the boost of easy-access storage is a smart trade-off.

Reworked Laundry Room Storage

In this laundry room and entryway combo, side-by-side appliances initially sat under the windows. Shifting to a stacked washer and dryer on the opposite wall greatly expanded the room's storage and work space. A long work counter under the window provides space for folding, while laundry room cabinets with flip-up doors take advantage of wall space near the ceiling. Think about narrow areas differently to gain more laundry storage options: A pull-down drying rack tucked into the corner saves space by folding up when not in use.

Small Laundry Room Cabinets

Not having space for a full-fledged laundry room doesn't mean you should sacrifice storage space. Try this laundry cupboard idea. These pretty white cabinets with Shaker-style panels help blend the walk-through space with the rest of the home but provide critical storage for laundry detergent and other items. A simple tension rod mounted across the open space in the middle creates a handy hanging area.

Open Laundry Room Cabinets

The laundry room cabinets in this space needed to maximize long-term storage but maintain counter space for daily tasks. To do that, the homeowners installed a narrow shelf a few inches above the countertop, using turned shelf supports to add classic details to the space. The spot offers quick access to everyday laundry essentials, while open cabinets above provide overflow storage for extra products. Hooks add even more quick-use storage.

Decorative Laundry Room Cabinets

More expansive laundry spaces might have room for extra features, such as a hanging rod or open shelves for laundry baskets. This pretty assembly keeps the space looking neat and tidy with a few decorative extras, including mullions on the glass doors, uniformly colored containers, and restrained punches of pattern and color. White laundry cabinets keep the space looking crisp and clean.

Trim and crown molding add visual heft to these contemporary laundry room cabinets. The mix of open and closed storage, pretty containers, and cabinets that stop before reaching the ceiling give the collection a lighter look and feel. Added storage between washer and dryer units provides the perfect spot to store dryer sheets or detergent pods.

White Laundry Room Cabinets

Using laundry room cabinets to repeat other details in the space helps to create visual cohesion. Here, the horizontal open shelves mimic the subway tile and add a few crucial storage inches to the off-the-shelf cabinets. Closed white laundry cabinets above conceal items like detergent, bleach, and other cleaners.

Clever Laundry Room Cabinet Ideas

Incorporate a fold-out ironing board to maximize small laundry room cabinets. A hidden nook between wall studs makes creative and clever use of what would be discarded space in this shared kitchen-and-laundry room. A compact ironing board folds down flat, while narrow shelves hold often-used products within easy reach.

Two-Tone Laundry Room Cabinetry

Cabinets needn't be the same color in a laundry room. Apply the two-tone cabinetry look with complementary hues, such as those in a more neutral palette, to help lighten and brighten a small laundry area. This gray and white laundry room cabinet design combines closed and glassed-in doors, as well as an open shelf for soaps and other laundry tools.

Laundry Room Cabinetry Solution

This oddly angled spot could have easily been wasted space, but a unique combination of laundry room storage cabinets helped to turn it into a practical laundry room. Foregoing upper cabinets keeps the room bright and sunny, while a corner sink-cabinet combo offers essential storage. On a slim pass-through wall, a narrow cabinet pulls out to reveal an ironing board. When closed, it serves as the home's message center.

Combined Laundry Room Storage

Homes sometimes don't have enough space for a separate laundry room, but careful attention to detail can help integrate this essential space into a mudroom or kitchen. Here, a narrow pass-through space supplies a wall of laundry room cabinetry and a utility sink. Upper cabinets that stretch to the ceiling offer storage for less-used items.

Streamlined Laundry Room Cabinets

For very small laundry spaces, lots of details on cabinets can be visually distracting. Instead, focus the use of pattern and color on the floors and walls, particularly if there are open shelves that might benefit from a backdrop. These laundry shelves over the washer and dryer provide easy access to necessities for each of the appliances. A narrow cabinet in the middle offers hidden storage for other hardworking items.

Mix-and-Match Laundry Room Storage

A variety of storage types equals multiple ways to store laundry room necessities. Combine open shelves, narrow slots, and a few closed cabinet doors for customized laundry room storage. Upper cabinets can stash seasonal items (think coats, gloves, hats, and mittens) while pretty baskets keep the open spaces more organized.

Laundry Room Shelving

Laundry facilities are often integrated into other rooms, such as mudrooms, kitchens, or even bathrooms, which can put space at a premium. Consider sliding doors or bi-fold options to conserve square footage, especially if your laundry space is accessed frequently. In place of laundry room cabinets, the open shelving here eliminates the need for even more door-swing space.

Laundry Room Cabinet Doors

For laundry spaces that fit into another collection of cabinets, such as those in a kitchen, consider a door that opens and slides back into the wall of cabinetry. This ensures that the working space can be open without any intrusion on the flow of traffic. This simple laundry room cabinet offers a few shelves and two doors that move in, back, and away.

Wainscoting, crown molding, and paneled doors add traditional charm to these laundry room cabinets. If you don't have space or budget for a built-in countertop, consider a panel placed on top of your washer-dryer for folding or open storage. This flat, easy-to-clean surface can also prevent spills from dripping down between the appliances.
