Happy Bee Day! This sweet-as-honey idea uses a baker's dozen cupcakes to create a bright yellow beehive cake with chocolate bee toppers.

Get the Beehive Cupcake Cake Recipe!

What You'll Need:

  • Your favorite cupcake recipe
  • Butter Cream Frosting recipe
  • Cake board
  • Disposable piping bags
  • Round decorating tips in large and small sizes
  • Black food coloring pen
  • Candy melts in yellow and white
  • Gel food coloring in lemon yellow, chocolate brown, and bright green


Bake cupcakes according to recipe instructions and let cool completely. For the beehive, you'll need 13 cupcakes. If desired, decorate the extra cupcakes as shown in the above image to place around the beehive.

Arrange 13 cupcakes into a beehive shape on the cake board, leaving room for a door. Prepare the buttercream Frosting. Apply a dot of Buttercream to the bottom outer edge of each cupcake to keep them in place.

Using a disposable piping bag fitted with a large round decorating tip, pipe strands of yellow buttercream in a side-to-side motion, working from the top of the beehive to the bottom.

Once you've covered the beehive in yellow frosting, cover up any missed spots with the excess frosting and outline the final shape of the cake.

To make the chocolate bee toppers, use a black food coloring pen to draw stripes and eyes onto yellow candy melts. Set aside.

Fill a disposable piping bag with melted white candy melts and snip the tip of the bag to create a small opening. Pipe wings onto a waxed paper-lined cookie sheet (they will look like open hearts).

While the wings are still soft, place the accented yellow candy melts onto each set of wings. Place the tray of bees in the freezer to set for 3 minutes.

Remove the bee toppers from the freezer and add them to the cake board around the beehive and as toppers on the additional cupcakes.

Optional: Tint additional frosting with brown food coloring gel, place into a disposable piping bag, snip the end, and pipe a couple of tree branches onto the cake board. Add leaves with a specialty decorating tip. Use white frosting and a small round decorating tip to pipe a birthday message.
