  • In 1-quart jar, layer ingredients in the following order: bread flour, yeast, salt, brown sugar, orange peel, anise seeds, whole wheat flour, pecans, and raisins. Seal; store in cool, dry place for up to 1 month.


To Make Bread:

Empty bread mix from jar into large bowl; set aside. In small saucepan, heat and stir 3/4 cup milk, 1/4 cup water, and 3 tablespoons butter just until warm (120 degrees F to 130 degrees F) and butter almost melts. Add milk mixture and one egg to bread mix in bowl; stir until combined.Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface. Knead in 2 to 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour to make moderately stiff dough that is smooth and elastic (6 to 8 minutes total). Shape into ball. Place in greased bowl; turn once. Cover; let rise in warm place until double (45 to 60 minutes).Punch dough down. turn out onto lightly floured surface. Cover; let rest for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, lightly grease 8x4x2-inch loaf pan. Shape dough into -inch loaf, tucking edges underneath. Place in prepared pan. Cover; let rise until nearly double (30 to 40 minutes).Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until bread sounds hollow when lightly tapped (if necessary, cover loosely with foil during last 10 minutes to prevent overbrowning). Remove bread from pan; cool on wire rack. Makes 12 servings.
