Garlic and Pepper Stir-Fry

The bold flavors of this stir-fry side dish make it the ideal companion for a juicy grilled steak.

  • 2 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

  • ¼ teaspoon cracked black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil or peanut oil

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 cup red, yellow, and/or green sweet peppers, cut into bite-size strips; carrot slices; and/or fresh pea pods (stems and ends removed)

  • 1 medium onion, sliced and separated into rings

  • 2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms

  • Sesame seeds, toasted


  1. In a small bowl stir together soy sauce, sesame oil, and black pepper; set aside. In a 12-inch skillet or wok heat cooking oil over high heat for 1 minute. Add garlic; cook and stir for 1 minute. Add sweet pepper and onion; cook and stir for 3 minutes. Add mushrooms; cook and stir for 2 to 3 minutes more until vegetables are crisp-tender.

  2. Add soy sauce mixture to skillet or wok. Cook and stir to coat vegetables. Transfer mixture to a serving dish. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Makes 4 servings.
