In a small skillet cook onion and garlic in hot oil until tender and golden brown; set aside.
Place the bread shell on a lightly greased or parchment-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of the fontina or Swiss cheese. Top with onion mixture. Cut up artichoke hearts; arrange atop cheese. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Sprinkle lightly with pepper.
Bake in a 450 degree F oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until cheese melts and pizza is heated through. Makes 12 appetizer servings.
