  • If necessary, cut meat to fit into a 3-1/2- or 4-qt. slow cooker. Sprinkle meat with salt and pepper. Place onion in cooker; top with meat. Add barbecue sauce and carbonated beverage.

  • Cover and cook on low 8 to 10 hours or high 4 to 5 hours. Remove meat; shred using two forks. Remove onion with a slotted spoon and add to meat. Pour cooking liquid into a glass measuring cup or bowl; skim off fat. Return meat mixture to cooker; stir in enough of the cooking liquid to moisten.

  • Serve meat mixture in buns with toppings.
