Sloppy Chili Joes

A cross between chili and traditional sloppy Joes, you can use ground beef, turkey, pork, or chicken for the meat of these sandwiches. Since you can make the filling in a slow cooker, these sandwiches are super easy to prep and take to a tailgate or party.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pound ground beef, pork, turkey, or chicken

  • ½ cup chopped green sweet pepper

  • ½ cup chopped onion

  • 1 8 ounce can tomato sauce

  • 2 tablespoon water

  • 2 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 6 hamburger or pretzel buns or kaiser rolls, split and toasted

  • Desired toppings, such as shredded cheddar cheese, chopped onions, and/or pickled jalapeno peppers

Directions

  1. In a 10-inch skillet cook ground beef, sweet pepper, and onion over medium heat until meat is browned; drain off fat.

  2. Transfer meat mixture to a 4- to 5-qt. slow cooker. Stir in tomato sauce, the water, chili powder, and cumin. Cover and cook on low 3 1/2 to 4 hours or high 2 hours.

  3. Fill buns with meat mixture and top with desired toppings.
