Brush unbaked biscuits with cream and gently place a fresh sage leaf on top of each to enhance the flavor. Another time, you can also swap rosemary for the herb and Parmesan for the cheese.

Ingredients

  • 3 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup butter, cut up

  • ¼ cup shortening

  • ½ cup shredded white cheddar cheese (2 oz.)

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh sage

  • ¾ cup canned pumpkin

  • ¼ cup milk

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F. In a large bowl stir together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt. Using a pastry blender, cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in cheese and sage. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Add pumpkin and milk; stir with a fork until moistened.

  2. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead dough by folding and gently pressing it just until dough holds together. Pat or lightly roll dough until 3/4 inch thick. Cut with a floured 2 1/2-inch round cutter; reroll scraps as necessary and dip cutter into flour between cuts.

  3. Place dough cutouts 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake about 15 minutes or until golden. Remove from baking sheet; serve warm.
