Drain pear halves, reserving liquid; set pears aside. In a large skillet, stir together pear liquid, brown sugar, and nutmeg. Bring to boiling, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Add pears and almond extract, turning pears to coat. Remove from heat; cover and set aside for 5 minutes.
Serve pears with some of the poaching liquid and sprinkle with almonds. If desired, serve with vanilla yogurt or ice cream.
