In a large bowl combine the first eight ingredeints (through salt). Toss lightly until just combined. Spoon into a 2-qt. casserole. Bake, uncovered, 25 minutes. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl combine the next four ingredients (through baking powder). Using a pastry blender, cut in butter until pea-size. Combine milk and egg. Add to flour mixture all at once, stirring just until combined. Spoon in 8 or 10 mounds over hot fruit. Bake 25 minutes more or until a toothpick inserted in topping comes out clean. Cool 30 minutes. Serve warm and, if desired, with ice cream or whipped cream.
