Add sugar, baking soda, cream of tartar, and 1/2 tsp. salt. Beat until combined, scraping bowl as needed. Beat in egg, maple syrup, and vanilla. Beat in flour. Cover and chill 30 to 60 minutes or until dough is easy to handle. Preheat oven to 375°F. On a well-floured surface, roll dough to 1/8 inch thick. Using 3-inch tree-shape cookie cutters, cut out dough. Place cutouts 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Reroll scraps as needed. Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until edges are just brown. Remove; cool on a wire rack. Pipe dollops of Maple-Cream Cheese Frosting onto cookies. Pull a small spoon or butter knife through frosting to make teardrop shapes. Makes 30 cookies. Maple-Cream Cheese Frosting In a large bowl beat one 8-oz. pkg. softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup softened butter, 1/4 cup pure maple syrup, and 2 tsp. vanilla with mixer on medium until fluffy. Gradually beat in 6 cups powdered sugar until combined. If you like, tint frosting with paste or gel food coloring. Tips In an airtight container layer unfrosted cookies between sheets of waxed paper Store at room temperature for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Assemble and frost before serving.
