Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease an 8x8x2-inch foil baking pan; set pan aside. In a small bowl combine flour, ginger, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and cloves; set aside. In another small bowl whisk together sour cream and milk; set aside.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl beat butter and brown sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add egg, beating on medium speed until combined. Gradually add molasses, beating until smooth. Alternately add flour mixture and sour cream mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined. Beat on high speed for 20 seconds more. Spoon batter into prepared pan, spreading evenly.
  3. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. (Cake might dip slightly in the center.) Cool in pan on a wire rack. Decorate cooled cake to resemble a gingerbread house using Creamy White Frosting, assorted candies, colored fruit leathers, colored sugar, and/or sprinkles. Cover pan.

TIP:

A fun way to make shingles is to cut large gumdrops with an egg slicer.

MAKE-AHEAD DIRECTIONS:

Cover undecorated cake with foil. Store at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw cake, if frozen, and decorate as directed.

  1. In a medium mixing bowl beat shortening, vanilla, and almond extract with an electric mixer on medium speed for 30 seconds. Slowly add about half of the powdered sugar, beating well. Add 1 tablespoon of the milk. Gradually beat in the remaining powdered sugar and enough remaining milk to reach spreading consistency.
