Directions

  1. Place one slice of bread on work surface; top with cheese slices, cutting cheese to fit so all the bread is covered (overlap as necessary). Top with remaining bread slice. Spread with half the butter. Place, buttered side down, in a skillet over medium heat. Carefully butter top bread slice.
  2. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side or until cheese is melted.
  3. Makes 1 sandwich

Grilled Provolone and Pepperoni Sandwich:

Prepare Grilled Cheese Sandwich as above, except use Provolone or mozzarella cheese and top cheese with 1 tablespoon pizza sauce and 5 to 6 slices (1/2 ounce) thinly sliced pepperoni.

Prepare Grilled Cheese Sandwich as above, except top desired cheese with several thin slices of apple or pear.

Grilled Cheese and Caramelized Onions:

Slice half of a small onion. In a small skillet, cook onion in 2 teaspoons butter over medium heat about 10 minutes or until onion is soft and golden brown, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle lightly with salt. Prepare Grilled Cheese Sandwich as above using desired cheese and top with onions.
