Danish-Style Mulled Wine

Many mulled wine recipes call for apple cider, but not this Danish-style version. It uses just a bit of vodka with the usual red wine and adds warm sweet flavors from cinnamon, brown sugar, and cardamom.

4 cups

  • 1 750 milliliter bottle fruity red wine (such as Cotes du Rhone, Malbec, or Zinfandel)

  • ½ cup vodka

  • ½ cup packed dark brown sugar

  • 1 stick cinnamon (3 inches)

  • 4 slices fresh ginger

  • 1 tablespoon green cardamom pods

  • 2 teaspoon orange zest

  • 8 whole cloves

  • Raisins and/or slivered almonds (optional)

  1. In a large jar or pitcher, combine wine, vodka, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, orange zest, and cloves. Cover; let stand at room temperature 8 hours or overnight.

  2. To serve, warm mixture over medium-low 15 to 20 minutes or until steaming (do not boil); strain. If desired, add raisins and/or slivered almonds and serve with additional cinnamon sticks. Serves 8.

If you are in a time crunch, you can skip the overnight standing time, for a nearly as good a result.
