Grease cookie sheets; set aside. In a large bowl, stir together shortening, sugars, egg, sour cream, raisins, dates, nuts, and citron or orange peel. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, cloves, soda, and nutmeg. Gradually add flour mixture to shortening mixture, stirring until well mixed.
Drop by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheets. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 9 to 11 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Transfer to a wire rack; let cool. Makes about 42 cookies.
