As the halva melts, it forms a crackly edge around the cookie base. Some Jewish sects avoid grains and seeds, including sesame seeds and derivatives, during Passover. Skip the halva and use coconut milk to make these dairy- and seed-free.




  • Preheat oven to 325°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl combine coconut, condensed milk, matzo meal, 1/2 teaspoon salt, cinnamon, cardamom and egg yolks.

    In a medium bowl beat egg whites and 1/4 teaspoon salt with mixer until stiff peaks form. Fold into coconut mixture; if desired, fold in halva.

    Scoop 2 tablespoon mounds onto baking sheets 2 inches apart. Bake 20 minutes or until golden. Remove from oven; let cool completely on wire racks. Makes 24 cookies.
