  • In a large bowl beat 2/3 cup butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Beat in 1/2 cup brown sugar until well combined. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in molasses and fresh ginger. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk to beaten mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined. Spread the batter evenly over the pears in the skillet.

  • Bake about 40 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack for 5 minutes. Loosen cake from pan; invert onto a large serving plate. If you don't have a cast iron or oven-going skillet, prepare brown sugar-butter mixture in a small saucepan; pour into a 2-quart rectangular baking dish, spreading evenly. Arrange pears, cut side up, in dish. Prepare cake batter as above and pour over pears. Bake in 350° F oven for 45 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool in baking dish on wire rack for 5 minutes. Loosen cake from dish and invert onto serving plate. Serve as above.
