The beauty of this homemade blackberry sauce is that its deliciousness comes from just three ingredients (four if you count water). Once it's done, it's perfect for topping vanilla custard, ice cream, and pudding, or for layering into a parfait.

  • In a 6- to 8-qt. pot combine blackberries, sugar, and the water. Remove 1 Tbsp. zest and squeeze 1/2 cup juice from the limes. Add zest and juice to berry mixture in pot. Bring to boiling, stirring until sugar dissolves; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, about 25 minutes or until sauce is thickened and reduced to about 3 cups, stirring occasionally.

  • Ladle hot sauce into hot, sterilized half-pint canning jars, leaving a 1/4-inch headspace. Wipe jar rims; adjust lids and screw bands.

  • Process filled jars in a boiling-water canner 15 minutes (start timing when water returns to boiling). Remove jars from canner; cool on wire racks.
