Let your feline's fiery fur inspire their moniker.

Once you finally decide on which cat you're going to adopt, you have to prepare for the arrival of your new kitty. One of the most fun (and sometimes difficult) decisions you need to make is giving your furry friend a name. One of the reasons you probably chose your kitty is because you love its eye-catching orange coat, and your feline deserves a name that is just as brilliant. Before we get into all the fun names for your cat, you might want to know a little bit about them. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, color comes from the X chromosome, so your feline could be male or female. (No, your cat isn't calico, as their genetics are different, and calicos are almost always female.) Interestingly, cat breeders often refer to orange kitties as red, but they also describe them as yellow, ginger, or marmalade. Every orange cat is considered a tabby, which you'll be able to tell because of the "M" marking on their forehead.

I really wanted to rescue an orange cat. I even chose the name Cheddar before I found this beautiful 8 month old orange kitten at the county humane society. The volunteers warned me - "he plays a little rough". Something bad must have happened to him in his early months - he was so mean to me and my daughters. They learned to stay away from Cheddar but he would attack me and draw blood on my arms and legs everyday. The cute little monster would jump up in my husband's arms and snuggle with him!?!
