5 Decor Trends We Can't Wait to Try from IKEA's New Catalog
The Swedish retailer launched its annual catalog, and it's filled with exciting interior design trends. Here's how to make the trends work in your own home.
IKEA recently released its 2020 catalog, and it’s brimming with affordable home products. With 208 pages of inspiration, it showcases legacy items (we remember the classic EXPEDIT bookcase before it became the KALLAX) now being sold at lower prices as well as fresh decor finds styled in innovative ways.
We love that the IKEA catalog features products in amazing living spaces, and this year's first-ever digital issue was no exception. It includes six distinct “homes” throughout the pages—all with varying styles, sizes, and budgets—to help you envision the products in your own home. While flipping through the pages, we noticed several up-and-coming home trends we’re excited to try; here are our favorites.
1. Open Storage
Instead of storing items behind closed doors, the IKEA catalog showcases open storage options for every room in the house. There’s open shelving in almost every kitchen vignette displaying cookbooks, coffee mugs, and drinking glasses. IKEA also introduced an open wardrobe, perfect for bedrooms with little closet space. Clear picture ledges and wall shelves—like the wire set featured in this kid's bedroom—give extra storage while saving floor space and acting as functional wall art.
2. Jewel Tones
Bold colors—especially jewel tones—are officially back. Rich shades like plum, emerald, and magenta are especially prominent in IKEA's bedding section, though they also make their way onto living room furniture, including sofas, armchairs, and curtains. Incorporate jewel-tone accents and furnishings, like this contemporary royal purple sofa, into a room for an unexpected twist.
3. Woven Textures
IKEA certainly isn’t the first company to carry modern twists on traditional rattan and bamboo pieces, but it does offer the look at a much more affordable price point. The new catalog features rattan dining chairs that add a relaxed, boho vibe to your dining room and bamboo vases to hold your favorite botanicals. Our favorite woven IKEA accessory? This rattan and metal serving cart perfect for storing bar accessories.

4. Sage Green
Sage green is the neutral you didn’t know you needed to try in your home. The warm, green-gray hue is muted enough that it can serve as the backdrop for any color scheme. Check out IKEA’s antique-style rugs, modern side tables, and bedding, all in soft shades of sage.
5. Storage Carts
Rolling carts are the new cabinet. Or at least if you ask IKEA's 2020 catalog. In addition to embracing the open storage concept, they’re easy to maneuver around the house as needed. Don't worry, the beloved RASKOG rolling cart is still available, but IKEA also introduced a few new models for use in the bathroom, kitchen, office, and living room.
New items from IKEA’s catalog are available now on their website and in stores, and we can’t wait to see how people use them in their homes. While the catalog is a good starting point, the styling possibilities are truly endless.
