Contrary to popular belief that weekend days are the worst to buy gas, historical data from GasBuddy shows otherwise.

No matter how hard we try, transportation costs seem to be the bane of a budgeter's existence. In cities where weather and terrain are unpredictable, free modes of transportation, such as walking and biking, are seasonal. The rest of the year, public transportation and private cars are the chariots of choice. Although global lawmakers are eyeing the day when fossil fuels will be a thing of the past, for now, gas (and some electricity) is all we've got.

According to 2019 stats, most Americans spent between $700 and $1,300 on gas annually. Residents of Maine and Wyoming are said to regularly pay above that amount. These are the kinds of costs that AAA calculated in its 2020 "Your Driving Costs" study, which tallied up the price of fuel per gallon, insurance, maintenance, and more.

To help figure out if it's better to lease or own—or whether to buy a mid-size vehicle or an SUV, they also shared formulas you can use to figure out an appropriate vehicle-financing plan to prepare for the true cost of owning a car.

While it is anyone's guess how much gas prices will rise, data from GasBuddy shows that the cheapest days to buy gas in 2021 were during early January. In 2020, prices dipped the most in late April and early May.

Earlier reports urged that Monday prices tend to be the most affordable, and that weekends are the worst time to find a deal. However, so far in 2021, the cheapest date to buy gas in states like Arizona, DC, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and West Virginia fell on a Saturday.

Gas Buddy offers historical highs and lows, so that you can see for yourself. If 2022 is anything like this year, the cheapest dates to buy gas may be just a few days away.
