Bio-Oil is a curiously popular skincare product with thousands of positive reviews on sites like Amazon, Walmart, and Ulta. But scan its rundown of skin benefits and you'll understand the hype: it's formulated to improve the appearance of post-surgery scars, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone. Fans of the product also rave about its effectiveness on dry skin. And those who haven't tried it yet definitely seem to be intrigued about the so-called skincare wonder. After all, there's nothing on the market that directly compares.

To find out more about Bio-Oil (available at Walmart,$14.99), its effectiveness, and how long it takes to see results, we asked dermatologists to weigh in on the multitasking skincare product.

What's in Bio-Oil?

It’s formulated with things like vitamins A and E, chamomile, lavender and rosemary to hydrate aging skin. “Bio-Oil contains antioxidants and vitamin A derivatives. These components help promote collagen synthesis in the skin,” Kathleen Cook Suozzi, M.D., a Yale Medicine dermatologist surgeon and director of Aesthetic Dermatology says.

While vitamin E has long been thought of as a reliable treatment for scar tissue, Suozzi says there isn’t much scientific evidence supporting the benefits of Bio-Oil on scars or stretch marks. But there’s absolutely no harm in trying it out, and the overwhelming amount of five-star ratings and positive reviews for it can attest to its effectiveness.

When and How to Apply

Bio-Oil is suitable for all skin types and can be used on the face and body. Suozzi recommends applying Bio-Oil to scars and stretch marks by gently massaging it into the skin. And while Bio-Oil has been said to help with acne scars, use it sparingly on your face if you have acne prone skin; using too much can actually cause acne to worsen, says Suozzi.

Dermatologist Shari Sperling, D.O., recommends using Bio-Oil twice daily on the affected areas. “Keep in mind, it can take up to three months to see results,” she says. Patience and persistence are key. Many reviews do note the extensive time it can take to see results, but if you stick with it you’ll reap the benefits.

Store your Bio-Oil out of direct sunlight with the lid screwed on tightly; the formula's antioxidants can break down and become less effective if sealed or stored improperly, advises Suozzi.

Should You Try Bio-Oil?

While it doesn't seem like dermatologists are totally convinced Bio-Oil will solve all of your skincare problems, it has a lot of promising ingredients, like vitamins A and E that promote skin renewal, increase elasticity, and protect against premature signs of aging. But remember, you won't see improvements to scars or stretch marks overnight (or even within the first couple weeks), when using Bio-Oil; you'll have to be consistent with its application for several months.

You can find Bio-Oil at most major retailers, like your local Walmart (for $14.99). Whether you'll be hopping on this skincare trend or not, at least now you know the facts—and what the pros think—about this popular product.
