'Amazon Day' is the company's latest initiative to reduce its carbon footprint.

Making spontaneous online purchases and getting them two days later is a luxury we’ve all enjoyed, but online shopping has its downsides when it comes to the environment. A standard trip to the grocery store is pretty efficient when compared to online shopping habits. You drive to the store, load up your car with multiple items, and drive home. Sporadic online purchases means multiple deliveries, more boxes, and more fuel—therefore a bigger carbon footprint.

Amazon has recently announced a new way for consumers to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing convenience. 'Amazon Day' is a checkout option that allows shoppers to select a specific day of the week to have all their packages delivered at once, even if those items were purchased at different times. That means if you ordered a refill for your Mrs. Meyer’s soap on Monday, extra dog food on Tuesday, and an impulse throw pillow on Wednesday, you could choose to have all items delivered in the same shipment on Friday. When possible, Amazon will also combine items into the same boxes to cut back on unnecessary packaging.

Amazon Day is a free option for all Prime members, and it’s flexible. Members who choose an Amazon Day will still be able to select different delivery options for more urgent items. Having the option to cut back on shipments will give shoppers the ability to be more strategic and environmentally-conscious in their online shopping choices.

Amazon Day is part of the company’s ongoing sustainability initiatives. More specifically, it’s designed to help the company achieve its Shipment Zero goal, which is working towards net zero carbon delivery. The idea of the largest online retailer producing zero carbon seems pretty impossible, but “net zero” is more about carbon neutrality. Another environmental buzzword, carbon neutrality is basically a method of breaking even. So for the amount of carbon Amazon produces, they need to also reduce in equal amounts to reach these goals.

So, avid online shoppers, this is great news for you. With a little extra planning, your online shopping habits can become more environmentally friendly. And receiving all of your packages at once will feel like Christmas morning!
