Rich wood flooring replaced outdated linoleum, and now the kitchen flooring matches the adjacent formal dining area and creates a cohesive look.

To make the most of limited square footage and create a more efficient work space, the homeowners moved the doorway from the mudroom over four feet and concentrated most of the appliances along one wall. Balancing dark cabinets with lighter countertops prevents the small space from feeling heavy.

Here, cabinetry surrounding the stainless-steel refrigerator gives the appliance a built-in look and adds much-needed storage for everything from foodstuff to dishware to hand towels. Like the light granite countertops, stainless-steel appliances and hardware help to balance the dark cabinetry.

Clean-lined cabinets were stained with a custom ebony-and-walnut blend. Sandblasted mirrored inserts in the upper doors reflect light and keep the space from feeling too heavy while still offering complete clutter coverage. Simple stainless-steel hardware ties in with the appliances and various kitchen accessories.

With limited space for cabinets, the homeowners had to rethink their approach to small appliances. Tucking the microwave into the large island saves much-needed overhead space and makes it easily accessible for the couple’s two children.
