This Kitchen Makeover Proves Orange Is the New Black

Kitchen remodel
In five months flat, this 1906 kitchen went from dated and dingy to functional and fashionable. See how the room remained architecturally authentic while gaining a splash of bold color.

Before: Reno-Ready

This kitchen's 1900s roots were evident, in ways both appealing and not. Despite its attractive architecture, the room's lack of natural light and cramped layout made it barely functional. It was time for a style overhaul!

After: Architecturally Authentic

Knocking out part of the wall between the kitchen and dining space ushered in practical function. Homeowners stayed true to the room's 1906 architecture with the cabinetry and window proportions. A punchy orange and navy color palette adds modern appeal.

Contemporary Upgrades

The use of rich, dark cabinetry combined with stainless-steel appliances elevates the kitchen's modern style. Glass-front doors prevent the small space from becoming too cramped. A subway-tile backsplash breaks up the bold color palette and offers added function on a budget.

Eclectic and Colorful

Placing the oven between cabinetry allows for counter space on both sides for food prep and storage. Oil-rubbed-bronze cup pulls and knobs add a touch of tradition to the modern color scheme. White kick plates beneath base cabinetry make cleaning a breeze.

Before: Out with the Old

A lilac-and-citron color scheme of decades past had to go, as did an interior wall that left diners and chefs in separate rooms.

After: Light and Airy

Adding one window above the sink, for a total of three, provided plenty of natural light to open up the space. Natural bamboo blinds allow sunlight to stream through the kitchen. A two-drawer dishwasher beneath offers options for smaller loads.

Plenty of Character

An era-appropriate sink in oil-rubbed bronze combines the history of the old home with its new modern design. Found granite countertops mix and match with light blue painted woodwork and the stainless-steel finishes of surrounding appliances.

Take a Seat

It wasn't necessary to add square footage to make the kitchen look and feel bigger. By knocking out part of an interior wall and transforming the lower portion into a breakfast bar, homeowners gained counter space for food preparation as well as a cozy place for guests to relax and visit.

Before: Bring Out the Sledgehammers

The scale of the cabinetry proved stylish, but not much else. A floor-to-ceiling remodel was in order.

After: Clean and Beautiful

After taking down the full wall of cabinetry, a full-size two-door fridge fits perfectly. Rather than cover every inch of the kitchen's perimeter, cabinetry is broken up into little stations to save space.

Make Your Own Rules

Although most avoid loud colors in small spaces, these homeowners went bold for a one-of-a-kind design. White trim and woodwork temper the cheery orange walls. Below, new linoleum floors provide the look of marble for less.

Lighten It Up

A modest pendant light is a classic way to brighten a space without overpowering it. The oil-rubbed-bronze base of this fixture matches surrounding finishes, while the curvaceous shape of the shade pays homage to the home's roots.

Before: Knock It Down

The plan for this remodel consisted of knocking down part of the wall between the kitchen and dining area to create a breakfast bar and improve function. Transforming the hall closet into a pantry saved space and money.

After: The Plan

This small kitchen remodel was full of functional changes that added practicality and flow. Diners and cooks can now interact thanks to a breakfast bar that joins a nearby living area. A sink, moved from a corner, now sits beneath three windows for plenty of light.
