The classic damask pendant shape started as a fabric and graduated into wallpaper, but the pattern didn't truly come into its own until we created this pumpkin stencil. It's easy to transform an ordinary pumpkin into an embellished beauty; just download our free stencil to get started!
Since this Victorian damask pattern is perfectly symmetrical, it's important to etch it on the flattest side of your pumpkin; lumps and deep ridges could warp the design. Select a pumpkin with at least one smooth side to serve as an etching "canvas," and also seek out a pumpkin with a flat underside to prevent your embellished masterpiece from rolling away from you.
1. Secure your printed Victorian damask pattern to the outside of your cleaned-out pumpkin with clear tape. Map the pattern onto the pumpkin's exterior by punching holes along the stencil lines with a pin tool or a large nail.
2. Rip off the pattern, and etch the design by using a gouge or sharp crafts knife to chisel away slivers of pumpkin skin. (Hint: Wipe away bits of pumpkin skin from the gourd's exterior with a paper towel.)
3. Place your beautifully etched pumpkin on display and light up the design with a bright battery-operated candle.
