Sometimes, you just need to kick back in the sun with your shades. This pumpkin stencil gets that. So when the air is too chilly to stay outdoors for long, let this funny emoticon sub for you by soaking up the rays on your front porch. (Trust us -- there's nothing he'd rather do!)
Need a tip as professionally cool as the stencil subject? Try tracing the design onto your pumpkin with a pattern wheel. This common sewing tool features a spiked wheel that makes quick work of perforating stencil lines. To trace, just press the spiked wheel firmly against the taped-on pattern and roll it along the stencil lines.
1. Log in to BHG.com, and download our sunglasses emoticon stencil pattern. Print the pattern, and place the page against the side of your hollowed-out pumpkin, smoothing it and taping it into position.
2. Trace the emoticon design onto your pumpkin with a pushpin by piercing along the stencil lines, creating tightly spaced pin holes in both the paper and the pumpkin's top layer. (Hint: For a quicker option, trace the design with a pattern wheel by following our instructions above.) Remove the pattern.
3. Use a thin serrated crafts knife to saw from hole to hole, cutting out the sections that form the design. Press on carved sections with your fingers from inside the pumpkin to dislodge them.
4. Smear petroleum jelly along all carved surfaces, and add a bright LED battery-operated andle to the empty pumpkin cavity to light up your design.
