Starry-Eyed Pumpkin Stencil

If we didn't know better, we'd think this carved pumpkin had just returned from Hollywood. With its broad, toothy smile and easy-to-carve shapes, this pumpkin stencil is certain to star in your family's pumpkin-carving traditions for years to come.

This starstruck gourd is sure to make a big impression! To make sure your pumpkin stays in good shape until its debut night, choose a pumpkin with a firmly attached stem and no hidden soft spots. Those qualities indicate a fresh, perfect-for-carving pumpkin.

To carve:

1. Cut the bottom off your pumpkin, making sure the opening is big enough to easily reach inside. Scrape the inside walls clean.

2. Transfer the printed pattern to your pumpkin, smoothing the paper onto the surface of the pumpkin as best you can.

3. Go over the stencil edges with a pin tool, poking holes into the surface of the pumpkin. Keep pin pricks about 1/8 inch apart.

4. When the stencil lines are completely outlined, remove the taped pattern. Now you're ready to carve.

5. Use carving tools to cut out the pattern. (Helpful hint: Carve from the center outward for best results.) Pop out the shapes with your carving tool.

6. Light the interior of your pumpkin with a candle or electric tea light.
