This friendly feline pumpkin would like nothing better than to enjoy the view from your porch this Halloween. With her long, pointy whiskers and small, satisfied grin, this carved cat pumpkin almost looks real enough to rub up against your ankles. (But that would be a fire hazard, so we don't recommend it.)
This straightforward cat design is perfect for pumpkin-carving novices, as there's only carving involved -- no etching required! If you'd like to take this cute design up a level, it's simple to substitute long, etched whiskers for the current carved ones. Instead of cutting along the whisker lines, just use a gouging tool to remove the pumpkin's top layer of skin, revealing the lighter-color rind below.
1. Use a serrated crafts knife to cut a circle in the bottom (not the top) of your pumpkin. Remove the circle, and cut a metal scoop to clean out the pumpkin innards.
2. Attach your cat stencil to the pumpkin with tape, and poke along the stencil lines with a pin tool. Keep holes within 1/8" of each other, making sure to puncture both the paper and the pumpkin's surface. Tear off the stencil.
3. Carve along the pin pricks, cutting out sections from the center of the design and working your way outward. Keep cutout sections in place until you've finished carving the entire design; then, press gently on the sections to pop them out.
