Try etching this exclamation point design (rather than carving it), then add an LED candle to the pumpkin's interior for a soft glowing effect. To test if you've whittled away enough pumpkin skin to see the glow, place a small flashlight inside your pumpkin and shine it at your etched design. It's an easy way to gauge your progress!
1. Log in to BHG.com to print our free exclamation point stencil pattern. If necessary, resize the pattern with a photocopier to fit your pumpkin.
2. Attach the exclamation point pattern to your pumpkin with tape and score the pumpkin's surface with a pin tool, piercing holes through the paper into the pumpkin's skin. Outline the design with holes; for best results, keep holes 1/8" apart.
3. Pull off the stencil and cut along the pin holes to carve the exclamation point design. Use a skinny, serrated crafts knife, and saw gently from hole to hole for best results. (You could also etch the design by using a chisel to peel away the pumpkin's top layer, following our tips above.)
4. Discard carved pumpkin pieces by pressing them outward with your fingers.
