CUL8R Pumpkin Stencil

If you're not versed in text-speak, just sound out this pumpkin stencil. (Clue: It's not pronounced "coo-later.") Still struggling? We'll give you one more hint: CUL8R, ALIG8R.

Say CUL8R to tedious stencil-tracing methods. For a quicker outlining option, turn to your sewing kit. We sometimes use a sewing tool known as a "pattern wheel," which is a tiny spiked wheel attached at the end of a handle. Run the wheel firmly along the stencil lines to pierce the paper and the pumpkin skin. It's easy and quick; just be sure to wash the tool afterward!

To carve:

1. Clean out the inside of your pumpkin by using a serrated knife to cut a circle in its underside, and scoop out the guts and seeds with a stiff metal spoon. (Editor's tip: To make an easy candle platform, lop off the pulpy side of the pumpkin circle to flatten it.)

2. Hold your printed CUL8R pattern against the pumpkin's side and attach it with tape, smoothing the paper down as best you can. Pierce the stencil lines by poking holes through the paper and into the pumpkin's skin with a push pin. (You also can follow our tips above to trace the lines with a pattern wheel.)

3. Tear off the pattern, and use a skinny pumpkin-carving knife to saw along the hole guidelines, cutting completely through the side of the pumpkin. Push out carved sections with your fingers after completely carving the design.

4. Add a flameless candle to the cutout underside of your pumpkin; place your carved CUL8R gourd over the top, and enjoy the flickery glow.
