Real candles add beautiful, irregular flickers to this carved crow's backlighting, but they do require an extra step. When using real candles, carve a chimney in the back of your pumpkin by cutting a small hole for smoke to flow through. You could also simply leave the top off your pumpkin (if you've carved the pumpkin from the top), or use a flameless candle for a no-smoke alternative.
1. Log in to BHG.com to download and print your free stencil. (Create an account with us, if you don't already have one. Registration is free!)
2. Attach your printed stencil to your hollowed-out pumpkin with tape. Use a pin tool to prick holes along the stencil lines, keeping pin pricks within 1/8" of each other. Remove the stencil when all lines have been transferred to the pumpkin.
3. Carve along the pin pricks with a thin, serrated knife, sawing gently from point to point. Press lightly from inside the pumpkin to release cutout sections, popping them outward.
4. Light your pumpkin's interior with a real or flameless candle.
