If you'd prefer, you can etch this playful design by using a gouging tool or a sharp crafts knife to chisel off slivers of pumpkin skin. Not only does etching give this design a whole new look, but there would be no need to leave a gap in his broad smile. Fill it in and grin!
1. Sign in to BHG.com to access our free stencil pattern. Print out the pattern, resizing it with a copier if necessary to fit your gourd, and affix the pattern to the side of your cleaned-out pumpkin with tape.
2. Duplicate the pattern onto your pumpkin by piercing the pattern lines through the paper and into the pumpkin with a pin tool or large nail. Space your pin holes close together, ideally about 1/8" apart.
3. Remove the paper stencil and carve along the pin holes with a skinny serrated knife. (Alternatively, you can etch this design by following our tips in the stencil caption, above.)
4. Pop out pieces by pushing on them gently from inside the pumpkin.
