Carved pumpkin faces are a dime a dozen, but a wood-grain pumpkin with cool, etched words? That's a neighborhood head-turner. With its detailed bark etchings and illuminated knots, this pumpkin is sure to be a front-porch masterpiece –- no need to knock on wood for that one!
Our wood-grain stencil will wrap nicely around small- to medium-size pumpkins. If your pumpkin is larger, resize the stencil to fit with a photocopier, or simply etch additional wood-grain lines freehand. Wood grain is already sprawling and irregular, so perfection isn't necessary -- just have fun!
1. Log in to BHG.com to download and print our free stencil pattern. Tape the printed pattern to the surface of your hollowed-out pumpkin.
2. Use a pin tool to make closely spaced marks along the stencil lines, piercing through the paper into the surface of the pumpkin. Remove the printed pattern once all lines have been transferred.
3. With a gouging tool, gently scrape along the wood grain lines to reveal the light-color rind below. Scrape away the pumpkin's surface skin for the lettering, as well.
4. Use a skinny, serrated knife to cut out wood knots. Press from inside the pumpkin to pop the wood knots outward.
