Pumpkin Mats

Mealtime will be safe from uninvited specters when guarded by jack-o'-lantern place mats and coasters recycled from grocery sacks.

What You'll Need:

Kids will love helping make these festive placemats.
  • Brown paper grocery sack
  • Scissors
  • Acrylic paints in orange and green
  • Disposable plate
  • Paintbrush
  • Foam pumpkin stamp in two sizes
  • Decorative-edge scissors
  • Compass
  • 2 yards of green jumbo rickrack
  • Sewing machine

1. For the place mat, cut off the bottom of the sack. Cut off the seam. Fold the sack in half and trim to desired size. Press the folded sack flat.

2. Put small amounts of paint on the plate. Paint the pumpkin parts of the stamps orange and the stems green. Stamp the pumpkins on the place mat. Continue stamping pumpkins in this manner until you achieve the desired look. Let the paint dry.

3. Trim the open ends of the sack with decorative-edge scissors. Machine-stitch rickrack around the edges of the place mat.

4. For the coaster, use the compass to draw two 4-inch circles on a sack scrap. Cut out the circles. Place the circles together and machine-stitch around the edges to secure the layers. Stamp a pumpkin in the center. Trim the edges with decorative-edge scissors.
