Cute-as-a-Bug Halloween Party Invitation & Treat Bag

This easy-to-make bug ensemble (invitation and treat bag) adds a festive flare to a kids' Halloween party.

What You Need:

  • Papers: black and purple
  • Scissors: straight and decorative-edge
  • Circle stencil
  • Stencil brush
  • Apple Barrel Acrylic Paints: Kiwi 20221, White 20503, Black 20504, Pewter Grey 20580, Concord Grape 20595
  • Four 1-inch wiggle eyes
  • Paintbrush: liner
  • Glue stick
  • Poster board: black and white
  • Black chenille stems
  • Self-adhesive foam dots
  • Glue gun and hotmelt adhesive
  • White paper bag
  • 1 1/4 inch foam ball
  • Spider-shape plastic ring

Invitation: How to Make It

  1. Cut a 5x7-inch rectangle from black paper.
  2. Stencil the bug body with Kiwi on black paper.
  3. Glue the wiggle eyes above the body.
  4. Cut a zigzag-edge half-circle in the bottom right corner of the black paper (to look like a bug took a bite).
  5. Use a liner brush and White to paint "Come Join Me," antennae, legs, fangs, and squiggly border.
  6. Use the liner brush and White to paint "I Won't Bite" on black paper.
  7. Cut around the phrase, using a squiggly motion.
  8. Adhere the cut rectangle to a slightly larger piece of purple paper using a glue stick.
  9. Use a glue stick to adhere the black "Come Join Me" rectangle to a 7x6-inch purple rectangle.
  10. Use a liner brush and Black to paint "Oops!" on the purple paper and the bug mouth.
  11. Use foam dots to attach the sign.

Treat Bag: How to Make It

  1. Stencil circles on the bag with Grape, Pewter, Black, and Kiwi.
  2. Cut a 2 1/2 x 4 3/4 inch rectangle from the black paper.
  3. Use the liner brush and White to paint "Happy Halloween" on the rectangle.
  4. Cut a 5 1/4 x 2 3/4 inch rectangle from purple paper.
  5. Use the glue stick to adhere the black rectangle to the purple paper.
  6. Cut a circle for the bug head from black poster board.
  7. Paint the circle Kiwi; let dry.
  8. Cut two circles from white poster board for eye shapes and two circles from black poster board for eyeballs.
  9. Use foam dots to attach eyeballs to eye shapes.
  10. Cut the chenille stem in half, hot-glue to the back of the bug face, and bend the top ends to curve the antennas. Outline the face and eyes with Black.
  11. Hot-glue the wiggle eyes onto the face.
  12. Paint the mouth black and the fangs White. Fill the bag.
  13. Fold the bag down and staple. Hot-glue the bug face to the top of the bag.
