Prepping your salad will be easier than ever with a salad bar located just steps outside your kitchen. Choose from an assortment of rich, colorful lettuces and spinach as your base. Add in homegrown carrots, onions, broccoli, and more to your salad. One of the best parts about having your own salad garden is that you can cater it to your needs; feel free to switch out any of our recommendations to fit your salad taste.

Before you begin, preparation is the key to creating a garden that will offer seasons of pleasure. Determine a suitable spot for your garden, as it will needs at least 13 X 8 feet of space to sprawl. The area will also need moist, well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. Leafy greens, like the ones in this garden plan, prefer nitrogen-rich soils, where compost comes into play. These same leafy greens will also grow back after being harvested—simply cut the plant about an inch above the soil line and new growth will come back throughout the season.

Not enough space for this salad bar? Try out a smaller alternative; this small-space vegetable garden plan includes all the fixings you'll need for your veggie-filled salad.

Our free Planting Guide for this garden includes an illustrated version of the plan, a detailed layout diagram, and complete instructions for installing the garden. (Free, one-time registration allows unlimited access to Planting Guides for all garden plans.)
