Vertical gardens add color and interest, and are the perfect way to maximize a small space. Learn how to create a fun, colorful vertical herb garden you can hang from your house or wall.
These hanging plants are not only a delightful addition to a small space, but they are customizable to your liking. The best part: most of the items you'll need to make this project can be found around your home.
What You Need
- Paint cans
- Colorful duct tape
- Potting soil
- Small plants
- Wooden planks
- Teacup hooks
Step 1: Tap Holes on Sides
Use an awl and hammer to tap holes on each side of the cans.
Step 2: Apply Duct Tape
Choose your favorite duct tape color or pattern and wrap around the tops of the cans over the holes. Then, using the awl, punch through the duct tape to open the holes.
Step 3: Thread Twine Through
Thread the twine through the holes in the cans and tie a knot on each side to ensure that the twine will stay put.
Step 4: Tap Holes in Bottoms
Use the awl and hammer to add holes to the bottom of the cans. These will act as drainage holes when you water your plants.
Step 5: Place Plants in Cans
Fill cans with potting soil and plant your plants.
Editor's Tip: We recommend a slow-release organic potting soil for optimal growing conditions.
Step 6: Screw in Hooks
Carefully screw in the teacup hooks onto the front of the plank, and make sure all of the hooks are turned in the same direction.
Step 7: Drill Plank to Wall
Find an outdoor spot and drill the plank into the wall or side of house. Use a stud finder to locate studs or use wall anchors to make sure the plank is secured safely.
Step 8: Hang Pots
Now, time for the finishing touch. Hang your pretty pots onto the hooks and watch your plants grow!
Editor's Tip: Water your plants regularly. The smaller your pot, the more quickly they will soak up water. To check if your plants need water, simply insert your finger in the soil. If it comes out dry, the plants need a drink.
