Fall Festivities Window Box

Your gardening doesn't have to end when the weather cools off in the fall. End the season on a high note with a window box that features colorful flowers and grasses.

Colorful pansies mix beautifully with grasses in this easy-care window box planting. This arrangement uses a color scheme of golds and yellows to celebrate fall color. Combine any ornamental grasses and fall flowers for a similar look.

A: Variegated sweet flag (Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus') — 2

B: Pansy (Viola x wittrockiana 'Matrix Red Wings') — 2

C: 'ToffeeTwist' sedge (Toffee Twist Carex comans) — 1

A: Variegated Sweet Flag

Although sweet flag looks like a grass, it is in a family by itself. Like grasses, though, sweet flags are grown for their textural foliage, especially the boldly variegated types. Acorus calamus 'Variegatus' forms an upright plant with striking green-and-white striped foliage stretching 3–5 feet tall.

B: 'Matrix Red Wings' Pansy

Pansies bloom in fall or spring and add color and delicate texture to any container garden. 'Matrix Red Wings' is a blotched variety with burgundy top petals and splotches around the center. This variety is fragrant and attracts butterflies.

C: 'Toffee Twist' Sedge

Sedges are suitable for almost any place you need to fill in the garden. Adaptable, easy-care sedges have earned their place in residential gardens. 'Toffee Twist' has bronze foliage, and prefers full- to part-sun.
