Can't find a fabric in just the right color? Get the perfect shade with a custom dye job, an easy and affordable DIY project. Here are the secrets to fabric dyeing success.

If you can't find the perfect color of fabric for your next decorating project, why not try dyeing your own? You'll be surprised at how easy and inexpensive it is, and you can get the perfect color. You want to choose fabrics made from natural fibers for your project. We use unbleached muslin. It dyes to this beautiful, earthy soft color, and it's only a couple of dollars a yard. Dyeing is super simple, as long as you have the right materials and setup. First, you wanna protect your surface. Put down a layer of plastic and then, a layer of paper on top. Also, you wanna protect yourself. Wear an apron, and wear a rubber gloves. When it comes to dyeing fabric, we preferred liquid dye over the powdered kind. It's just easier to use. And remember, hot water out of the tap isn't quite hot enough. Use boiling water so you get the most intense color from the dye. Mix up small batches of the colors you're considering. Mason jars work great. Then, dye a small piece of fabric in each color. Be sure to follow the directions on the package. Dyeing your own fabric is easy, fun, inexpensive. And the best thing, you get exactly the color you're looking for.
