DIY Lampshade Update

Embellish a plain lampshade with puff paint and our free pattern.

Fake the look of embroidered French knots with this easy paint technique.

Plain lampshades are common, so why not try something unexpected, like a design that mimics the look of complicated embroidered French knots? At first glance no one will know that this design is actually crafted from puff paint and didn't take hours of needle-and-thread work.

What You Need:

  • Pen
  • Plain drum shade
  • Tape
  • Dimensional fabric paint

Step 1:

Download and print the pattern. On the pattern, circle every other dot with a pen. Use the pen tip to punch holes through the circled dots on the paper pattern (right).

Step 2:

Position the punched paper on the shade, lining up the bottom edge of the paper with the bottom edge of the shade. Tape to secure.

Step 3:

With the pen, make tiny marks on the shade through the punched-out dots until the design is complete (right).

Step 4:

Remove the paper, and then apply paint dots over the pen dots (right). Allow the paint to dry for three hours.
