A wood base holds it together in rustic style. Watch and follow our step-by-step instructions below to create your own desktop accessory.

What You Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 12-gauge wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Broom handle or dowel
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Drill with drill bit, fit to size of wire
  • Small wood slice (ours is 4-1/2 x 1 inch)
  • Glue

Step 1: Cut Wire

Measure desired length of wire, and cut with wire cutters. We made our tallest piece of wire 10 inches.

Step 2: Shape Wire

Wrap wire tightly around the end of a broom handle 3-4 times. Remove and bend inside of curl in with pliers to tighten the coil. Straighten the tail-end of the wire so it stands upright in the wood block.

Step 3: Prep Wood

Drill a hole in the wood slice the same size as your wire. Only drill about halfway through the wood slice.

Step 4: Insert Wire

Insert wire into hole. Bend wire stem to create fun shapes and sizes.

Step 5: Repeat and Finish

Repeat Steps 1-4 to make several more wires of various lengths and shapes. Once your wood slice has 4-5 wires, line them up to visualize your design. Remove and put a dab of glue on the end of each wire. Return to the drilled holes and let dry. Add photos of friends, family, and fun times for a custom desk accessory.
