House Tours: Hipster Atlanta Home
This West Coast couple's current Atlanta abode is filled with collected art and furnishings that fit their modern sensibility and starving-artist budget, making it the picture-perfect backdrop for their cool lifestyle.
The homeowners were first drawn to this 1955 home because of the split-level and open beamed ceilings that reminded them of California architecture. The first thing they did was paint all the walls pure white to create a clean backdrop for their furniture and artwork.
Personalize a Closet
The homeowners designed and built shelves to fit into the living room closet to hold their massive collection of LPs, CDs, cassettes, and music equipment. Bifold doors hide the collection when desired.
The credenza, found at a thrift store in L.A., was a steal at $24. It's simple and boxy yet sleek and elegant with its pointed legs.
Lamps are more than supporting players in this house. They introduce shape and color into every room. Most are vintage treasures picked up for as little as $10. The one common element that unifies each lamp: a new shade.
The dining area is simple yet elegant with its unique table and chair set. The orange abstract painting by Robert Irwin hanging above the table adds color and interest to the white walls. Plus, it's a great conversation starter.
The bright white continues in the kitchen, where the couple brightened the all-black '90s decor with painted cabinets, a creamy quartz-surfacing countertop, spherical pendant lamps, stainless-steel appliances, and a new tile backsplash.
The narrow kitchen didn't have the space for a large island. Instead a stainless-steel side table offers a preparation area and appetizer station for get-togethers.
The mix of greenery, steel, and concrete creates an urban junglelike feel to the side table accessories. The homeowners created this "recycled" artwork on their own for just $20 with the help of silver leaf (shown here behind the plant).
Instead of loads of pattern, texture is a main source of detail in the master bedroom. From the brick fireplace to a furry rug, this bedroom is full of contrasting textures.
Savvy Spa Bath
The bathroom sports gray Venetian-plasterlike walls and a large soaking tub. Simple spa-like accessories maintain the space's already soothing vibe.
