Embellished-Pocket Tote

The generous proportions and stylish design of this tote make it a welcome addition on any outing.

What you'll need:

  • Vintage postcard or greeting card
  • Iron-on transfer paper for a computer
  • 3/4 yard of striped fabric
  • 1/2 yard of blue decorator fabric
  • 1-3/4 yards of 3/8-inch-wide satin ribbon
  • 9-inch purse handles
  • Four velvet flowers
  1. Scan a vintage postcard or greeting card. Print out the image on the iron-on transfer paper.
  2. From the striped fabric, cut two 14x11-1/2-inch pieces for the front and back pockets, two 14x13-inch pieces for the lining front and back, three 5x14-inch strips for the lining base and sides, and four 2x2-3/4-inch strips for the tote-handle tabs. From the blue fabric, cut two 14x14-inch pieces for the bag front and back and three 5x14-inch strips for the bag base and sides. All measurements include 1/2-inch seam allowances.
  3. Press under 1/4 inch twice on a 14-inch edge of each striped pocket piece. Cut two 14-inch lengths of ribbon. Position a ribbon length on the right side of each pressed pocket edge; sew in place. According to the manufacturer's directions, fuse the iron-on onto a pocket, or for a patterned fabric, iron the iron-on onto a plain piece of fabric and then fuse this piece onto the pocket. Cut two ribbon pieces the width of the transfer; cut two ribbon pieces the length of the transfer. Position the ribbon pieces over the edges of the transfer, mitering the corners; sew along each edge.
  4. Place a pocket, wrong side down, on the right sides of the blue bag front and back pieces, aligning the side and bottom edges; baste 1/2-inch from the side and bottom edges. With right sides together, sew a bag side to each short edge of the bag base. Pin the assembled bag sides and base to the bag back and front; sew. Turn the bag right side out and press.
