Journal and Pencil

A matching pinwheel diary and pencil make great gifts for birthdays or any other special occasions.

What You Need:

Sometimes the fun is just outside the front door, blowing in the wind.
  • Hardcover journal
  • Awl
  • Ribbon
  • Fabric glue
  • Fabric
  • Paper
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge
  • Button
  • 3/4-inch screw post
  • Straight pin
  • Mechanical pencil eraser
  • Pencil

1. Punch a hole in the journal cover using an awl. To make the pinwheel's "stem," glue a piece of ribbon close to the cover hole and then down the front of the journal.

2. Glue, seal (with Modge Podge), and cut out a 4-inch square made from contrasting fabric and paper. Glue a button to the head of the screw post. Assemble the pinwheel, and secure it to the journal with the screw.

3. To make the pencil, glue, seal, and cut out a 3-inch square made from the same two materials used for the journal. Assemble a pinwheel using a pin. Poke the pin through a mechanical pencil eraser for stability and then into the eraser of a pencil.
