Whether it's the scent of herbs crushed underfoot on a pathway, the heady perfume from an old-fashioned bush, or a faint scent drifting on the breeze, fragrance adds one more dimension to the garden.
The fragrant, bright yellow-gold flowers of the daylily Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro' make it a popular choice in public and private landscapes throughout our region. The long-blooming flowers top grasslike foliage from June to September, and require little more than adequate moisture and daily sun for years of performance.
Night-scented stock (Matthiola bicornis) lives up to its name. The clusters of pink, purple, and mauve flowers on this annual are so fragrant that they perfume the garden on summer evenings. Grow it in well-drained soil and full sun.
In June, white blossoms on mock orange shrubs smell of sweet citrus. Philadelphus lewisii 'Cheyenne', a locally adapted Plant Select variety, is drought-tolerant and hardy to Zone 3, which includes mountain elevations to 8,000 feet. Littleleaf linden (Tilia cordata) is a medium-size landscape tree that is especially hardy and requires little pruning. Its tiny flowers are highly perfumed in summer, and may attract bees.
