Sturdy and weatherproof, a galvanized steel barrel is the ideal "pot" for a winter arrangement that can withstand even the harshest elements. Look at flea markets and antiques stores for an old vintage barrel, or pick one up from your local home improvement store. With a few branches and berries, you'll have a farmhouse-style Christmas decoration that will last for years to come.
What You'll Need
- Galvanized barrel
- Snow shovel
- 12 assorted birch logs
- Tall white branch (approx. 3 feet)
- Spray paint (if needed)
- Faux red berry branches with lights
Step 1: Fill with Snow
Place your barrel where you want it to stand, then fill it with shoveled snow. This will hold the container in place and serve as the base to hold your decorations. Plus, you'll get the front walk cleared at the same time!
Step 2: Place Logs
Next, arrange about a dozen birch logs vertically in the snow as desired. You can purchase bundles of logs at your local garden center or home improvement store. Their characteristic white bark fits in well with the rustic holiday theme.
Step 3: Tuck In Branch
To match, tuck in a white branch approximately 3 feet tall in the center of the logs. Look around your yard or ask if you can use tree clippings from a garden center. If you don't have a white branch, use a plain one with an interesting shape and spray-paint it white.
Step 4: Branches of Berries
Finish your arrangement with faux pre-lit branches with red berries. You could also add a real berry-filled branch and drape outdoor string lights around the setup. This rustic barrel will light the way to your holiday festivities at night and provide a bold burst of color during the day.
