What You'll Need:

  • Printed photos
  • Scissors
  • Wood slices
  • Sandpaper
  • Decoupage
  • Cricut vinyl in assorted colors
  • Cricut cutting mat
  • Cricut fine-point blade
  • Cricut Maker
  • Cricut transfer tape
  • Scraper tool
  • Vintage broach or jewelry
  • Hot glue
  • Ribbon

Step 1: Print and Trim photo

Start by printing an old photo directly onto regular printer paper. To do this, you'll need to scan the photo to create a digital file and print the photo from your computer. This preserves the original photo (and allows you to print more than one copy in the case of any cutting or gluing errors). Trim the printed photo to be slightly smaller than the surface of your wood slice; to get a perfect fit, trace the wood slice on the back of the photo and then trace a smaller line, following the curves of the original outline.

Step 2: Distress and Secure Photo

Use sandpaper to distress the edges of your photo; the sandpaper will remove some of the printed ink, leaving the white paper visible below and giving the photo a vintage look. Rub the sandpaper all the way around the edges until you achieve the desired look, then secure the photo to the wood slice with a coat of matte decoupage.

Step 3: Create Text

When the decoupaged ornament is completely dry, add a personal element by placing a word or name over the top of the photo. Use Circut Design Space online to create text that measures slightly smaller than the width of the photo. Place a piece of vinyl onto your Cricut cutting mat and cut the phrase using the fine-point blade on your Cricut Maker. Make sure you choose "vinyl" when you get to the cut screen. When your word or name is completely cut, remove the vinyl from the negative space around the text.

Step 4: Transfer Text

Use a piece of clear transfer tape to attach the word to the photo ornament. Place the tape over your cut word and rub the surface of the tape until you're able to lift the tape with the word attached. Then, use the tape to center the word on your ornament. Rub the back of the tape with a flat tool or Cricut scraper tool and then gentry peel off the transfer tape, leaving the vinyl text secured to the photo.

Step 5: Attach Broach and Ribbon

To finish the ornament, attach a vintage broach or piece of jewelry to the top of the ornament. We love the idea of upcycling vintage jewelry that belonged to the person in the photograph, if available. Use a bead of hot glue to attach a loop of ribbon to the front of the ornament, then use another bead to attach the broach, covering the ribbon. When the glue is dry, your ornament is ready to hang!
